| Chapter 9 |
[Jun. 13th, 2006|12:00 am] |
This something that is fairly new and I think I remember parts of it in public school but not as in-depth as the one described in the book. I was very surprised how students and teachers can work together in providing a grade it sounds like some of the courses I am taking which is very helpful because it brings to my attention how I am learning. This also puts the education into my hands to see if I am actually using it properly. Also I feel it is fair that the students takes part in grading him/herself because the grade belongs to that person. Students shouldn’t be graded or tested on what they know but our society needs that because it creates numbers and numbers are more manipulative then just saying that you know it.
I feel this rubric the students are able to see their own progress and build on it. As for teachers it would make them stop guessing and assuming the child’s ability. I had a friend he didn’t talk a lot so the teacher assumed he should be in ESL and he went. A week later he came back because the ESL teacher felt he had fluent English. But back then minorities like Chinese, Sri Lankan, Indian and others were considered to be ESL children because they came from an immigrant background. With this rubric it will get rid of the uncertainty teachers have and then start to assume. My friend was really embarrassed when he was sent to ESL because he was a minority already and being in ESL makes him even more of a minority.
I feel this is a very difficult task to follow since it is time consuming but if the teacher is able to manage the time right both the student and teacher can benefit from assessing each other. The there is an example in the book of a rubric but it still needs fine tuning in order to be nation wide and accepted across the school board. I always feel that assessing yourself is not enough but to have someone that knows you to assess with you is the greatest constructive criticism for you to improve yourself and others. |

| Chapter 8 |
[Jun. 11th, 2006|04:45 am] |
This chapter blew me away since it was getting more advanced by the second. With every chapter I feel there are stages with tech from public school to high school students can comprehend. With software that is able to teach you to problem solve it makes it easy for students to learn on their own pace. I would never think that outer space could be brought to a classroom so detailed with just one computer. If given one computer per person I feel group and peer help can be encouraged which makes learning even more engaging because students may learn and retain information but if they are able to talk about it, put it to practice and help someone with a question the students gets the most out of all that learning. I am relatively new to this software and teaching style but I feel with all this tech it just might make it too easy in leaving the student to learn with out the guidance of a teacher or professor. Just learning from a program and other students is not enough a teacher or professor needs to be available to the students all the time 24hrs a day 7 days a week because students can learn on their own pace and at anytime that is why a teacher needs to be available all the time if the student is in trouble. I know it might be just too demanding to a teacher but the student is pretty much learning on their own and can learn at anytime of day and night. The only thing is to ask of a teacher is just to answer emails quickly or just being available. Also the student needs to learn at a reasonable pace and not just leave things to the last minute as well. I feel there is a medium between the students, teachers and tech that we all need to find in order to have a well balance in being educated. Overall I do feel that all students can benefit from this software; students and teachers can work together to overindulge to get the fullest potential. |

| Chapter 7 Micro and V/R Worlds |
[Jun. 4th, 2006|09:01 pm] |
For every chapter I go through I always come across something I thought I know a lot about but in the end I would need to add on the information I have read to what I already know. I feel that most of these chapters sheds light on my idea of what multimedia is, internet in general, and now virtual realities. I thought virtual reality was something you strap on your head and away you go boy was I wrong. I never knew virtual reality can be child’s play and can be as simple as putting on a glove. A virtual reality environment is another educational tool that can engage children to explore things that would not be accessible. Instead of just reading history a child can actually experience history which to me is very cool because I remember all those day in public school just looking at pictures about Canada and its history but never had the chance to know what certain areas of Canada look like but just reading about it. Since I was a kid I was always a very visual learning person and reading to me is a very grueling process because after I finish reading it I don’t think I got anything out from it. With children creating micro worlds this was the first time I ever heard of micro worlds. I was very surprised how children can create such elaborate worlds using physics and math. These micro worlds are very engaging I wish I had that kind of software like SimCalc and OWL when I was in grade school because I was always behind in my school with average marks and no matter how hard I tried I was always behind in something. I feel by the time I am married and have children schools will be totally different when my children attend school but with all this technology at their disposal my own children will have a higher chance of being successful in life. |

| Chapter 6 HyperMedia |
[Jun. 4th, 2006|07:52 pm] |
I never new multimedia had such a branch off into different directions. I always thought multimedia is just stuff that is able to connect to the computer like disks, internet, DVDs, software and etc. But then hypermedia came and I thought it was just multimedia on steroids but it wasn’t. But after reading and thinking about it is on steroids because hypertext is a bunch of various medias being able to accessed by almost anyone at anytime and the level of interactivity is overwhelming compared to a mere DVD that you just lend to a friend and might never get back. I was surprised how young children are able to create such an intricate information forum for the world to experience. Also I never knew that a webpage was considered a product of hypermedia but now I understand that thousands or even millions can access that webpage if it is something that people have a lot of interest in. This is another hyper engaging teaching tool for young children because it is able to build in their interests and they would be able to push that interest to the world to see if other people have the same interests. In sharing their interests they can also socialize with other people about that interest and build their webpage or hypertext to fit their needs. The use of this educational tool can be chaotic because it is very hard to control or measure how much the child is learning or are they learning? But I feel with a well planned out curriculum a teacher is able to keep track of the chaotic learning showing results in the child’s learning. I feel the role of the teacher in this educational era about hypermedia is coaching because “coaching is less directive method of teaching, usually involving prompting or provoking the students with questions about the content and treatment they are using.” I have a feeling my own children will be doing stuff that I did when I was 16 at home for fun in public school, which will not be surprising to me. |

| Chapter 5 Visual Learning Technology |
[May. 28th, 2006|12:10 am] |
I thought TV was the greatest invention since sliced bread but its not. I grew up with TV and when my class in grade 7 some odd years ago I remember we did a class survey about how many hours of TV do you watch and to my surprise I watched well over the class average. Looking back at that I feel I was watching 2 times the norm because I am Chinese born Canadian and my parents emigrated from Hong Kong. After school I watched English programs and in the evening I watch Chinese programs with my parents. If I never did that I don’t think I would have learned how to cope with my parents because it would be like a chicken talking to a duck. I guess that is the only thing I got out of watching TV but for people that just watch TV passively it is a different story. The chapter is correct about TV not being engaging and children as well as people get nothing from. The chapter had great ideas in having the children involved in TV through production. I feel children would learn more or at least remember what they did if they produced it like how I remembered my TV productions in grade 7. I felt that I learned more and was enriching then the rest of the school year. As for children today it will be more advanced because of digital and access to equipment is much more affordable and available. If I had access to that equipment I think my preschoolers would benefit greatly from it because they watch a lot of TV. Also understanding TV for them would give them a better incite in what is TV not just thinking that it is just a box with pictures or people inside. Also this would give us a better understanding what are children watching, what do they get from it, and how do they interpret TV. |

| | itch itch itch | ] | Everyone has a different perspective and every age has different perspectives too. Taking pictures is a form of art, memories, catching the right moment and anything in-between. The world in a perspective of a 7, 11, and 15 year old wow that is a trip because I cant even remember some of my childhood at those ages. I know that with pictures those children will remember a part of their childhood. And this is also a way for children to experiment and get involved. Experimenting with the possibilities of picture taking and also a form of social interaction before and after the picture is developed. Cameras are getting cheaper and developing is getting affordable. So not just children will have fun and experiment with cameras adults can too. I myself have purchased a new digicam and it was 3 times cheaper then the one I bought 4 years ago and the new one has even more functions then the old one. But I can’t complain because I have made many memories with that old one and with that old I can accually give it to my preschoolers to use for a day and have them go around taking pictures. The best thing about digicams is that you can take as many as you want and develop as many as you want which makes it so versatile for children. Children can learn a lot from using a camera because it can build problem solving, technology understanding, group or individual, self-discovery and a form of communication as well. This kind of technology is very common because they are on phones, mp3 players, and anything they can fuse a camera with. Having a digicam is the next cell phone because it is form of communication and convenient to have because sometime you just wish “ahh man, I wish I had my camera” for those special moments and the pictures can be sent to your relative half way across the world. |

| Hacking Human:data-archaeology and surveillance in Social Networks |
[May. 27th, 2006|04:09 pm] |
To me this is something that is common because I know some people that hack into computers for fun and just delete some files and open their cd rom to freak them out, as a child would ride a bike and play in the sand. I never thought people could get info from your computer if they were good enough to break all the cookies and firewall. I think there is always someone or some program that is always following you around waiting for you to make that mistake and they will get the info they need to terrorize your identity. I have this spyware that detects these spy programs on a daily basis and everyday my computer gets a couple and the only way to get no spyware on your computer is to not go on the internet like that will happen (unless another blackout hits). I always thought those were just a program that follows you, just records the sites you have visited and records them like a person following you around and recording your activities for the day in real life(but that costs too much so having a program that does it, is perfect). But for sure you are never alone on the internet and if a hacker wants that info they need to do some serious damage to your credit there is no way to stop them. The only way is to prevent it from happening. There are these little sayings on the internet you see “don’t give out your information” and “upgrade your programs to increase security” and etc. These are only preventions and will never stop it from ever happening. People might get scared or paranoid and will never go on the internet again but they will miss out on a the richness the internet has to offer because I feel using the internet is like going out and going out you need to be careful too. Like not loosing your wallet, crossing the street, and talking to people you trust. I guess a hacker just takes advantage of those little things like loosing your wallet. But you cant stop the inevitable because soon I think everyone will be online and going out past your front door will be like a vacation because it has been proven the people can live without going outdoors but will be a long to come. For now we just need to be careful and prevent hackers from invading our front door. |

| | worried | ] | It is understandable that humans are social creatures. There is always a need for human contact because people share common interests. I never communities can be this complex because it branches off into lots of different areas people feel drawn towards to. Through these branches people are able to find other people that share the same interests. Throughout my many years of being on the internet I never thought you can do so much on it and it is virtually limitless. There are hundreds of communities for you to choose from and you can be in multiple communities. With online communications there are a variety of different ways to communicate even though we may lose the benefits of face-to-face communication the other methods of communication comes very close. Also these conversations can be more detailed and saves time. For a child to be experience this kind of enriching environment a larger amount of children will be involved because each child is able to fine tune their preferences of communications and will be able to communicate with a larger number. I feel learning from communities’ gives you a chance to not just learn but to teach others as well. Almost everyone is able to benefit from communications online because of the variety of learning styles that can be accommodated. |

| Chapter 3 Learning from the internet |
[May. 19th, 2006|01:01 am] |
Learning is not just from a book anymore. Those days are over because internet has taken over. You not just connected to a classroom you are able to connect to hundreds of classrooms and within those classrooms thousands of other students. It is crazy in this little world, what I mean this little world is getting smaller and smaller. Internet and the web enable anyone who is able to click a mouse or browse a page to connect to world. This just shows that you are not alone in the world or you’re not the only one in your community that has this particular problem. With this technology anyone is able to connect to the world and have help from other people around the world to help solve your problem or just someone to talk to about special interests. Children these days can benefit from this because they communicate with someone half way around the world with a touch of a button. This is all hands on learning the typing/spelling, the reading/talking and everything in-between because the internet knowledge for the children is limitless. The internet can bring all children that cant afford an education, or don’t have the ability to reach schools to learn. Of course the basics of computing need to be learned and I was even surprised how much of the things I thought I knew about had more of meaning to like the codes associated with countries and codes associated the type of website. There are some technical words I had some ideas of but this book gave me some more incite in what they actually mean. As for children they would be learning the ideas of the tech and then with hands on learning they will learn what they actually mean because children and technology are getting younger and younger. Once all children are able to access computers the classrooms will be larger and teachers will be there to supervise and answer questions because a computer is a tool that is able to teach all types of learners and make learning easier or more advanced depending on the child’s level. |

| Chapter 2 Problem Solving is Meaningful Learning |
[May. 17th, 2006|06:22 pm] |
Learning? How do we learn? How much can we learn? Can learning be easy? Learning is innate so learning should be easy, learning is unlimited, and learning just comes natural. I never knew there is so many ways people can learn. But you can’t forget the fact that there are many kinds of different people in the world so learning techniques should be vast and unlimited. Solving problems are most meaningful part of learning because people can get a lot more of it compared to just reading and reading and reading. And it all about memorizing and cramming. I know in the past I have never did well in school because I am not a very good memorizers and people that are able to memorize stuff tend to get the higher marks. I found that putting what you have learned or learning in action made me wanted to learn more and remember it better. Technology has been the best tool for me to get through school if it were not for computers and Internet I don’t know where I would end up. With the power of the internet and a computer a person can look up anything for example a word, you can find out what that word means, its origin, how can it be used, examples of it, and anything that is attached to that word. With that vast amount of knowledge all put infront of you are able to search for answers to the problems you may have, all this info isn’t just within your community but around the world even in text you don’t understand. Pulling all this together anyone is able to solve the problem and anyone can build on it to solve it. Solving anything needs the help of individuals and solving world problems needs the help of the world. |

| Weblogs and collaborative web publishing as learning spaces |
[May. 14th, 2006|07:41 pm] |
I would never think webblogging has its own world, "blogosphere". This is a new world for me but i have seen exisitance of it in the past few years. With webblogging i feel it makes the world wide web much wider and larger. Like the article says knowledge is never ending and in order master this vast knowledge one must "learn from nature, from other people, and from things, and only when these three masters are in harmony do we gain understanding." With webblogging it can teach all people with all different types of learning.
I always thought that people can stop learning when they get to a certain age but i think if you can "bang your head on a keyboard" you can learn from the computer. Even a kid can learn a lot from a computer just by blogging. When i heard a little kid documented his trip to Japan to show his friends back home it was very cool. This is just a beginning for adult and children alike to blog thier life story and experiences.
Throughout my life of school, I feel I have learned more from a computer and internet then sitting in class listening to people talk. It would be nice to meet from time to time but to be in a sweaty class in the summer without A/C. When I was a kid i use to watch TV all the time and then internet came through a phone line, and now cable or DSL. I spend more time on the computer then infront of he TV and maybe a occational movie from time to time and shows from time to time but i watch them on my computer or d/l them. I think i might have saved more money bring infront of my computer since i have buy stuff on it that are most of the time cheaper even with customs from buying it in person. Saving gas too. Some people say there is no social aspect in internet but i think there is a vast amount and more compared to inperson activity. With internet you are connected to the world and you are socializing with the world not just the people around you. I have met lots of people from the net and we met in person. Like the article i feel internet interaction will get younger and younger.
Being a future teacher I know I will be using some kind computer in my class and the internet will be a nesseity. |

| | sad | ] | I never knew women can have stokes too?? Probably because when ever i watch TV or a movie men seem to have the heart attacks and stokes. But stokes for women are fatal. My aunt was not lucky to be the few that can survive. This women was only at the age of 67 that is pretty much the time you start taking it easy and look back on your life and say hey i did pretty well. It was a very good year for her this year because her son got married just recently in January. It was unfortunate she was a very nice person and was a great wife and mother. Also it was bad timing because mother's day is just this Sunday and she just passed away on Wednesday. I feel really sad because i remember the days she took care of me and brang me to a park when my parents went to HK. I really feel sorry for my uncle and my cousins because they are the ones that had more memories of her. |

| Parents that are unloving? Why? |
[May. 9th, 2006|03:32 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | crushed | ] | What is wrong with parents that have children and dont love them? I have a friend she has this problem with her parents. She is in a family of 4 with a little brother that is only a year younger. When she was young she was forced to do all the house work while her little brother sat there and palyed video games. She got tired of it and spoke to her mother why doesnt the brother do some chores too? Your brother doesnt listen to me and you do so you do them. So she got really upset keeping in mind that she was only in grade school. So she felt that if her little brother didnt do anything she will do nothing as well. After a couple of days of doing nothing like the brother they took away her bed forced to sleep on the floor. And she did. A day or two later they took away the light bulbs in her room. A day later she went to school without lunch and sat in the cafeteria being the only person without lunch while children looked at her and made fun of her. A couple of days later she had no dinner too. What is a little girl in grade school to do?? What kind of parents are these? Who thinks of ways to degrade their own child like that?? I dont even want to tell you the verbal abuse this parent did. And it was the mother that did all of this torcher while the father sat idle and did nothing. What is a little girl to do?? Is was weeks sleeping on the floor, no proper meals, living in the dark, laughed at by other children, degrading with words by her own mother, a father that didnt even care, and a poor little girl that experienced how far her mother would go. All this just because she wanted equal rights in the household. She had enough so she had to give in to the mother's demands because where can she go? who can she turn to?? who will believe her story??? A little girl in grade 5 that was tired of being a maid to the family and being unloved because she was born into a family that didnt even treat her like a human being. And this is only one story about this little girl. How do you think this little girl grew up??? I am just upset that this little girl grew up hating herself, still seeking recognition from her parents, still confused if the parents love her, what kind of little brother she had, low self esteem, no confidence, degrades her self because too because it makes her feel better (I am confused about that one??). She tells me that she feels better when she hates herself, she feels better when she is standing in her mother's shoes hating that little girl because she didnt do what the mother told her. How can a little girl grow up to hating herself that makes her feel better about herself it is like a double negative. And of course this little girl is all grown up with an unstable personality and parents that ignore her when she talks to them, still seeking that love that she never got from them, recognition of being a good girl, and still nothing. What can this adult do now? run away? never see them again?? avoid them completely??? never talk to them ever???? But she doesnt want to let them see her a the worse daughter in the world?? And then the son that did nothing is considered the good son for doing nothing. While the little girl in grade school was burden with translating the parents taxes, helped open up their first bank account, reading the bills and anything a immigrant parent wouldnt know in a new country this little was burden with. Also while translating all this she was degraded because she couldnt translate all and make it understandable to them. Tellin this little girl that you are not listening to the teacher, are you learning in school?? you need to do your home work more?? I never knew they teach you how to do taxes in grade school, or pay bills, or what is credit or debit?? These parents are the worse parents in the world next to the dirt worse but this girl still thinks she can get love from these people. That is what I dont understand. She feels that if she can get love and recognition from these people it will be a better person. But how can you get blood from a stone. But these parents are not stone she says defending them?? I am lost confused and tired I cant help this little girl I have done alot? I feel she needs professional help but she cant afford it and even if she could she wouldnt go. I was willing to pay for it I didnt care if I had to get a loan to do it because if she never met me I think she would have gone into darker paths. What is a person to do?? |

| What is Meaningful Learning?? |
[May. 5th, 2006|02:19 pm] |
Yes.... What is Meaningful Learning? In what i have read it took me for a spin because "hey this is how i want to teach" just that this person was able to put it into words, then in a book and sell it. I was like wow engaging the students, that is what i do with my preschoolers. Letting the child being able to find the and home in on their own skills and being on the side to support that learning. Sometimes i feel that in the many books i purchased for the many courses i have taken i could have written a book about it. But that would take alot of time and money, which i have little of especially money. The 5 attributes in the book explains alot and they are all interrelated. Once the 5 attributes are in place any learner can benifit from the education with this foundation. Meaningful learning is something i might still be learning but for sure i have experienced some of it before i read the reading. With this reading i was able to label it and remember it better and add it on to my own Meaningful learning experience.
